Lovro von Matacic in a historic recording

Giuseppe Verdi: Requiem for Soli, Chorus and Orchestra

Zagreb Philharmonia
"Branko Krsmanovic" Chorus

Radmila Bakocevic, soprano
Ruza Pospis-Baldani, alto
Ribert Ilosfalvy, tenor
Tugomir Franc, bas

This is a live recording from a concert given in the Vatroslav Lisinski concert hall, september 1974. It must have been taken from a radio broadcast. The dynamic range in Verdi's Requiem which spans from ultra soft to extremely loud passages is not always easily captured. Therefor one should not expect a perfect microphone placement applied in this recording.
This box with 2 LP's was prepared in 1985 as is indicated on the labels. It was released after Matacic had passed away in 1986. There is a short In Memoriam printed in the accompanying booklet as well as a remembering of bas singer Tugomir Franc who died when he was only 48 years of age in 1983. Notes are in Croation and German.

For a better impression right-click on a picture and chose "open image in new tab".

Jugoton LSY-62125/6. Records M-. Booklet NM. The box is sturdy, shows an unedited photograph of Matacic. There is nevertheless some shelf wear.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Requiem K 626

Recorded in 1955 in the Stephansdom in Vienna to commemorate that Mozart died 200 years ago.

1956 was declared the Mozart Bicentenary Year. Many a record label issued existing and newly recorded material with works of this great composer. Philips is known for having devoted an extensive Mozart Jubilee Series. Deutsche Grammophon recorded various works. They also recorded the church ceremony to commemorate the 'return of Mozart's Death', or as is printed on the covers, 'Gedenkgottesdienst zur Wiederkehr von Mozarts Todestag'.

The performance of the Requiem Mass took place in St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna and started with churchbells ringing. The celebrant was Monsignore Penall. Singers were Irmgard Seefried (Soprano), Gertrude Pitzinger (Contralto), Richard Holm (Tenor), and Kim Borg (Bass). The Chorus of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra were conducted by Eugen Jochum.

The linen box contains two records in individual gatefold covers, a card with the details of the recording, and a book with a few photographs, the text of the Requiem and the translations in German, English and French, as well as an essay written by musicologist Alfred Einstein (1888-1952) and an introduction written by pianist Erik Werba.

Archive (Deutsche Grammophon) 14111 and 14112 APM. Records EX. To the eye the engraving does not have high dynamics. The Box is practically NM. Labels are far from pristine. They show their age and use as you can see. The Book is NM. The Covers are as New. Obviously an item for the collector of rare and remarkable phonographic issues.

Leos Janacek:

The Diary of One who Disappeared

Tagebuch eines Verschollenen

Ernst Haefliger - Tenor
Cora Canne Meijer - Mezzo-Soprano
Felix de Nobel - Pianist
Three Members of the Netherlands Chamber Choir

Live recording of the performance on July 14th, 1954

The liner notes: THE DAYBOOK OF ONE WHO VANISHED is a song cycle for tenor, alto and three female voices. The original is probably a poem by the person who disappeared himself. Who was he? A farmer's son, hard working on his father's estate, in East Moravia. One day he suddenly vanished and was never seen or heard of again. 21 poems were found in his room. It was first thought that they were a collection of folks-songs, compiled by John, the farmer's son. Subsequent examination however , showed that they might possibly contain the key to John's disappearance, for they told of an inexperienced youth who was fascinated by a gipsy - after a great deal of emotional conflict - decides to accompany her into exile.

Sung in German (in a translation by Max Brod) and performed during the Holland Festival of 1954. The polished, yet expressive voice of Ernst Haefliger, the rare occasion when Cora Canne Meijer is heard, and the accompaniement by pianist Felix de Nobel make this a historic document of artistic merit of the first order.

Maria Caniglia (soprano),
Ebe Stignani (mezzo-soprano),
Beniamino Gigli (tenor),
Ezio Pinza (bass),
Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro dell' Opera di Roma,
Conductor: Tullio Serafin.

This is the French issue of this famous recording. Plates and pressings made in France date from around 1955. Released in the Series 'Les Grandes Collections'. Reference numbers FJLP 5002/5003.

This recording was made in the shellac era, in 1939. It is amazing how well the technique was for transferring 78 RPM recordings to the LP format. In that sense these two records are a collectors item.

Records are VG. But very well playable. The two individual covers are M-. Records still have the original paper inner sleeves. Small booklet with liner notes in French.

Beethoven: Missa Solemnis, Op.123

Soloists: Emilia Petrescu (soprano) - Elena Cernel (mezzo-soprano) - Aurel Alexandrescu (tenor) - Alexandru Voinescu (bass)

Chorus and Symphony Orchestra of the George Enescu Philharmonic. Chorus master: Stefan Moresanu.

Constantin Silvestri - Conductor

To admirers of Constantin Silvestri's conducting the existence of this 2xLP gatefold edition of Missa Solemnis is well known. Yet it is a relatively rare item. It is originally a live performance, probably a radio recording, apparently from 1952, which was rerecorded to bring it to a higher level. Yet the sound quality does not match the standard which was common in the nineteen sixties and later.

The inside of the cover does not have liner notes or a booklet. It is possible that the records were issued without notes, or the former owner had lost any annotation. See Google Groups about this performance and recording.

Historic performance issued on Electrecord ST-ECE 011257 01158. Records are NM. Gatefold is NM.

Erna Berger - Soprano
Ernst-Günter Scherzer - Piano

Robert Schumann: Frauenliebe und Leben

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy - Lieder (songs) (10)

A reviewer wrote that the songs from Frauenliebe und Leben are generally sung by a heavier voice (alto). But Erna Berger's beautiful voice is truly appropriate to the Schumann cycle. One tends to forget that four of the eight songs should be sung by a young girl, that the fifth song is sung by the bride, the sixth by the married woman, the seventh by the young mother, and the last song by the somewhat older, riper wife.

This original Electrola WCLP 531 disc and its gatefold cover are in no way NM or M-. The record is EX-. There are two marks on the Schumann Side (1/3 of the engraved section) which do not effect play and are not obtrusive. The cover is VG. There is writing on the front and there is a spot where obviously a sticker had been torn off. There is writing on the back also, and a newspaper clip with details about Erna Berger (in German) is fixed with tape inside the gatefold cover. The date of acquisition is written also on the back: 1957. This is obviously an item for the die hard and to be added if several more records are ordered.

Unicorn UNS 210 from 1970. Record EX. Cover NM.

Apparently the Requiem is a work that is not easily recorded because of the coincidences of choir, orchestra and brass instruments in the venue that was chosen. Skills and abilities of technicians are important. The audible quality of this disc depends much on the audio set in use. Hence this is an item for the collector of Bruckner performances, not of the high fidelity enthousiast.
