Maurice Ravel: String Quartet in F Major The Budapest String Quartet: Josef Roisman and Alexander Schneider, 1st Violins - Boris Kroyt, Alto - Mischa Schneider, Violoncello The recorded performance by the Budapest String Quartet of the Ravel Quartet is listed in catalogs of 1942 (4x78 RPM CM425), 1948 (4x78 RPM CM425), and 1950 (LP ML 4091), all in mono. In 1953 Columbia released a new recording of the Ravek and Debussy Quartets as ML 4668. In 1960 Columbia again made a new recording of the Debussy and Ravel Quartets in stereo and released on MS 6050. In 1953 Philips Phonographische Industrie started the exchange of recordings with Columbia. Most Philips recordings landed on the Epic label. Columbia recordings appeared on the Philips Minigroove label. The Philips 10" disc with reference A 01606 R is from 1954. It is the same as on the new 1953 release. In 1944 Schneider left the Budapest Quartet and officially rejoined the group in 1956. This means that Schneider must have played in the quartet on several occasions or just once for this recording by Columbia. Judging from the sound of the Philips Minigroove is excellent. There is no hiss and the sound has detail. A copy of the master tape recording was sent to Philips Phonogafische Industrie in Baarn, the Netherlands. Philips

Dmitri
Shostakovich Is
there an intimate Shostakovich? Is there empathy? Or are his compositions
simply constructions that show the master's skill instead of the greater
humanity? Is his music the orchestration for the sake of effect? The music
he wrote was literally out of tune compared to "the greats"
who end up in the compilations of beloved and popular compositions under
the title "Music for the Millions". Why is that? Because his
personality, his mindset, forced him to fill in and repeat his own conservative
form that was the basis for his symphonies and concertos. He could not
escape the increasing pressure of the strict political line and continued
to compose without undergoing any significant influence from this or that
artistic movement or person. Shostakovich lived and created in his own
domain where he was the leader. Although there are proponents and opponents
of his music, there are also music listeners who discover more and more
that there is a sensitive, spiritual expression to be found in his music.
Especially in the quartets where the pursuit of effects has had less chance.
Recorded
in 1983, 1978, 1982, 1981. See for complete details the listing by Kuisma

Giaccomo Rossini:
Sei Sonate a Quattro Salvatore
Accardo, 1st Violin Duetto for cello and double-bass Alain
Meunier - Cello Un
Mot a Paganini Salvatore
Accardo - Violin Une
Larme Franco
Petracchi - Double-bass
These are the cherished and praised performances of the Six String Sonatas of Giaccomo Rossini. They were made famous by the performances for string orchestra under Neville Marriner thanks to the high quality recordings made by the Decca engineers for the Argo label. Marriner conducted the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields which was founded in 1959. That is why the original versions were somewhat forgotten. Rossini was a prodigy. He composed these sonatas for string quartet (two violins, cello and doubble-bass) when he was 12 years old. While Neville Marriner made these sonatas popular it was Salvatore Accardo who chose to perform the compositions as they were originally conceived. Sides One, Two and Three contain the Six Sonatas. Side Four of this 2 LP Set contains Duetto for cello and double-bass, 'Un mot à Paganini' played by Salvatore Accardo and pianist Bruno Canini, and 'Une larme' performed by Franco Petracchi with Bruno Canini at the piano. All performances are of an extremely high artistic level. On top of that the Philips recording engineers have taken the utmost care to achieve a natural sound. It is really amazing what can be achieved with the analog recording technique. No wonder that these recordings were immediately recognized as being outstanding.

recording with Debussy and Ravel was published in the summer of 1958 and
