This is a rare LP record issued in August of 1954 as is printed on the back of the typical Deutsche Grammophon stitched gatefold cover made and printed in Germany. The liner notes are in English. This must be the issue made for the English speaking collector. The label is of course the ALLE HERSTELLER label. Cover and labels lists the performers but not what they are playing on this disc. I checked therefor an old Deutsche Grammophon catalog listing mono recordings from the 1950s. From that catalog the above details were taken.

The record contains the DGG pianists who recorded in the early 1950s. Andor Földes had returned from the USA (where he spent the war years and even recorded a selection for Don Gabor's Continental Records). Kurt Leimer was an admired pianist who later in his carreer concentrated on composing. Julian von Károlyi made recording for Deutsche Grammophon starting in 1943. Stefan Askenase is mainly known for recording the music of Chopin for Deutsche Grammophon.

Daniel Wayenberg plays Ravel:

Piano Concerto in G

Concerto for the Left Hand

Orchestre du Théatre des Champs-Elysées conducted by Ernest Bour

In the 78 RPM era there were recordings of a Ravel concerto by Marguerite Long (Ravel), Jacqueline Blancard (Münch), Robert Casadesus (Ormandy), Alfred Cortot (Munch), Jacques Février (Münch), and Leonard Bernstein (Bernstein).
In the mono vinyl era came Vlado Perlemuter, Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer, Robert Casadesus, and Monique Haas. In 1961 the recordings of the two concertos with Samson François were released. One year later Benedetto Michelangeli's recording of Concerto in G was issued together with Rachmaninoff's No. 4. There was also the recording of John Browning available. Most recordings were available in many countries. The Wayenberg-performance on Ducretet however was never an export hit.

Emil Gilels plays Tchaikovsky's 2nd Piano Concerto with Evgeni Svetlanov conducting the USSR Symphony Orchestra

Recorded live at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire on December 18. 1972

The urgency, the thrill of the live performance, the knowledge that splicing is out of the question and that therefor you have to give your very best. This provides an uncanny intensity at various instances. It is all in this uncommon recording, which shows greatness in all three movements. The original recording from 1972 was restored for this late release by recording engineer V. Ivanov.

The book is in Dutch. The pictures speak for themselves. Yet for your convenience I have printed a 2-sided paper which lists the artists and the works on these 30 sides. This box is also listed on Violin.

The labels are also pristine, except for the first record which has labels that omitted the logo of copyright control and the Dutch STEMRA logo which is the equivalent of British BMI, American ASCAP and German GEMA. That prompted the former owner to draw a small circle in black.

Wilhelm Kempff plays the Five Piano Concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven

Paul van Kempen conducting the Berlin Philharmonic

When Deutsche Grammophon prepared the issue of the complete Piano Concertos of Beethoven with Wilhelm Kempff as soloist and Paul van Kempen conducting - Nos. 3 and 5 were recorded in 1955, No. 1 in 1956, and in 1957 Nos. 2 and 4 - they decided to make the release a special one. The producers selected special material to be included in the accompanying book of the set with texts by Romain Roland, Claude Rostand, and selected excerpts from Wilhelm Kempff's autobiography.

To add to the significance of the release and most certainly to honor the pianist, they asked Wilhelm Kempff to personally sign the accompanying book of each of the first one thousand sets of this release issued. And that makes this edition unique.

After the stereo format was introduced in the fall of 1958, a new series of performances by Kempff recorded in stereo (but now with Ferdinand Leitner conducting the same orchestra) was undertaken and became available in 1962. And then the same texts written by Roland, Rostand and Kempff were printed in the book of the new edition. Except for the fact that Kempff personally did not sign the first one thousand copies.

The box is practically MINT which is amazing after more than 60 years. The records however are VG to VG+ and should maybe played with a mono cartridge or just on a modern record player. To evaluate the quality the discs were auditioned using a Philips MM cartridge with elliptical stylus with good results. The book is NM. Notes are in German, in English and in French. Vladimir Horowitz plays Rachmaninov: Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30.

Live recording made in Carnegie Hall, January 8th, 1978. The New York Philharmonic is conducted by Eugene Ormandy.

Rachmaninoff said that Horowitz played his Op. 30 far better then he himself did. Proof was given in the later recording of Vladimir Horowitz with Fritz Reiner (RCA LM 1178, from 1952).

Here we have Vladimir Horowitz playing together with Eugene Ormandy, known also for his association with Sergei Rachmaninoff. It is a performance captured on the spurr of the moment and without the technical make up applied through re-mixing and splicing, while combining bits and parts of different evenings. The recording was issued as a memory of this particular evening for admirors of Vladimir Horowitz and a memory for a rare appearance with a symphony orchestra. The liner notes in German.

The new Kempff series was released in 1962 while the Fischer-Fricsay disc remained in the catalog for many years as Heliodor 89513. Benno Moiseiwitsch plays

Schumann: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 54

Edvard Grieg: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 16

Otto Ackermann conducts The Philharmonia Orchestra

These recordings were first released on disc in February, 1952 and was the first to couple Grieg and Schumann Concertos and that example was followed later by more labels. The famous recordings of these works by Dinu Lipatti with Alceo Galliera and Herbert von Karajan respectively followed in a same coupling in September, 1955. Reviewers differ on the merits of Moiseiwitsch in Grieg and Schumann. My personal impression is that the Schumann concerto gets a livelier rendition than Grieg's epos. plays Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

*Rondo capriccioso, op. 14
*Sonata op. 106
*Variations serieuses Op. 54
*3 Fantasies op. 16

Ilse von Alpenheim's outstanding interpretations of these works of Mendelssohn, especially 'Variations serieuses', are admired by pianists and record collectors the world over. The works were recorded in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Ilse von Alpenheim was married to conductor Antal Dorati. And they surely formed a musical pair. Both musicians are outstanding although Ilse von Alpenheim did not make too many recordings. She did the Haydn Piano Concertos for VOX/Turnabout. On occasion with her husband conducting the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.

Vol. IV - Op. 63, Op. 67, Op. 68, Opus Posthumous, and Nos. 52 to 58

Recording the complete Works of Frederic Chopin was undertaken by Polskie Nagrania to be issued on the Muza label right from the start when the stereo recording era started in 1958. The project was supervised by Janusz Urbanski. The first records were published in 1959 (coinciding with the 110th year of Frederic Chopin's death). Many volumes were to be followed in subsequent years with Polish artists like Halina Czerny-Stefanska, Barbara Hesse-Bukowska, Lydia Grychtolowna, Dziela Wszystkie, Henryk Sztompka, Jan Ekier, Jerzy Zurawlew, Ludwik Stefanski, Wlodzimierz Tomaszczuk, Witold Rowicki, a.o. The sound quality is typically what we know of this Polish label. When the project was completed, the entire collection was made available in a large slip-case-like box. In Germany the recordings appeared on the Telefunken label in France on Erato and Eternas in the German Democratic Republic.

The Music of Tibor Serly & Béla Bartók

Geza Fried and Luctor Ponse play Tibor Serly's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.

Ditta Pásztory-Bartók plays her husband's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 (recorded in 1964).

Both performances conducted by Tibor Serly pupil and admiror of Bartók.

This was a record from a radio station's collection. The record was in relatively good shape. The cover was ugly. It had paper tape and stickers. And there was some writing. Instead of slipping the disc in a plain, generic cover, a new cover was constructed using the elements of the original sleeve.

These are mono recordings issued on Keyboard Records K102-M. The record is EX. The cover is new. The back of the old cover with liner notes is included in the deal.

Around 1958 Philips released several Vox recordings from the mono era. This one is of Vlade Perlemuter originally released in a VOX BOX containing the complete Orchestral Works of Maurice Ravel. The single Concertos disc from this set became only later available, in France in 1955 as Pathé Vox 9220, and In Great Britain in February of 1957. Perlemuter knew Ravel and this may have given him some insight in how to execute these works and would give authenticity to his performances of the Piano Concertos with conductor Jascha Horenstein.

Vladimir Horowitz plays the Music of Frederic Chopin

Polonaise Fantasie - Mazurkas (7) - Etudes (4) - Sonata No. 2 - Ballade Op. 23, No. 1 - Polonaises (3) - Waltzes (2) - Introduction & Rondo

Recordings made in 1962, 1966, 1968, 1971, 1974, 1981 as stated on the labels.

This beautiful 3-LP issue is adorned with a rare photograph of pianist Vladimir Horowitz in his library leafing through a music book while his dog is sitting on the window sill patiently waiting for his boss to stepp down.

The box is from 1981 and comprises studio and live recordings of Vladimir Horowitz made after he had left Capitol and joined Columbia Records (CBS) in 1962. As stated on the labels the performances were taped in the years 1962, 1966, 1968, 1971, 1974 and 1981. The sound quality of all recordings is what we expect from a quality label like CBS and it has the famous clear piano tone which in itself is a trait of Columbia's recording technique. Many consider the sound also to be the result of the preparation of the grand piano and displays how Vladimir Horowitz wanted his playing to sound like. It is a nice set also because of the analogous nature of the sound.

Gina Bauchauer plays the Emperor Concerto

Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73.
Stanislaw Skrowaczewski conducts the London Symphony Orchestra.

This recording was made in London by the Mercury Living Presence recording team, originally on 35 MM Film Recording, in April and June 1962. The recording was issued in several editions, Mercury Mono MG 50321, Mercury SR 90321, Philips Hi-F- Stereo 838 500, and Fontana 6531 004. The edition offered here is the Fontana release but pressed form the Hi-Fi Stereo 838 500 plates. The sound is excellent and slightly warmer than the original Mercury, but has the characteristic of the Hi-Fi Stereo.
The existence of Gina Bachauer's performance was hardly marketed and had vast competiton from other great pianist's in the catalogs of Decca/London, Philips, Deutsche Grammophon, His Master's Voice. Yet her performance has grandeur, strength, and accuracy. See also the pages about Mercury Recordings on the Fontana Label.

Gina Bachauer plays Johannes Brahms

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in B minor Op. 83

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski conducts the London Symphony Orchestra

This is the famous performance of Gina Bachauer that was recorded during the time when Mercury Records and EMI had a contract. (Another great recording is the one by Geza Anda with Ferenc Fricsay conducting). The Bachauer disc was issued in Great Britain on EMI's Mercury label in 1963. Philips had bought Mercury in 1962 but could not prevent the EMI release. Later the recording was issued on a Philips Mercury disc. And by 1969 Philips issued this recording together with many other Mercury recordings on the popular Fontana label, first from plates that had been provided by Mercury and cut by George Piros, and after a while new transfers to lacquers were made in the Philips factory in Baarn from tapes provided by the Chicago based company. This is one of the Georg Piros cuts.

Martha Argerich plays Scherzo In C minor, Op. 39, and 3 Mazurkas Op. 59

Well executed performances of Rossini and Mendelssohn. The Chopin recordings stem from the Polskie Nagrania Muza catalog, and were originally released in 1966 after Martha Argerich had won the 1965 Chopin Piano Competition. They are here issued together with the Rossini and Mendelssohn works in a 2 LP gatefold edition for the Dutch market. Plates and pressings were made by the Philips pressing plant in Baarn. The concerto and recital recordings are of the live performance. as there are at least two instances where there is a light noise from a contact probably in a microphon cable. The presence of an audience is never prominent, only when there is applause. Martha Argerich plays with her well known and also admired dynamic and refined virtuosity.

The style and grandeur of pianist Claudio Arrau is evident in the recordings of the Piano Concertos of Johannes Brahms, in the 1950s with Carlo Maria Giulini on HMV, and in the 1960s with Bernard Haitink for Philips. Then there are the Philips recordings of the Beethoven Concertos with Haitink, his formidable Beethoven Complete Sonatas set, and his Liszt recordings, all for Philips.

Philips wanted Arrau to record Debussy when he was already at a high age. The result is a 3 LP set with refined renditions of Préludes, Images, and Estampes when the maestro had reached the reputable age of 77. This box with 3 LPs is not a re-issue of older Debussy recordings. The box includes a Portrait of Claudio Arrau written by Joseph Horowitz and there are Commentaries on the compositions by Max Harrison, all printed in English, German and French. It is part of the complete Claudio Arrau edtition of 58 records in 8 Boxes/Gatefold covers.

Ingrid Haebler - piano
Christoph von Dohnanyi conducting The Vienna Symphony Orchestra

W.A. Mozart: Two Concertos for Piano and Orchestra in B minor, K 595 and 456

After the Artist and Repertoire Division of Philips Records had licensed a few recordings made by Vox productions of Susanne Lauterbach, Vlado Perlemuter, and others, they took an interest in the young Viennese pianist Ingrid Haebler and contracted this outstanding Mozart and Schubert performer. Before they decided to record the complete piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart they had made a recording of two concertos conducted by Christophe Dohnanyi who had studied in Florida with his grandfather Ernst von Dohnanyi. These recordings were released on a Fontana Full-Stereo disc. Full Stereo on Fontana was the equivalent of Hi-Fi Stereo on Philips. Recordings on Full Stereo were of Karel Ancerl, George Szell, Isaac Stern, Rudolf Serkin, Adam Harasiewicz. A few years later the Fontana label in this form was discontinued and became just a label for reissues of old recordings. The Philips company started to record the complete set of Mozart Concertos with Ingrid Haebler under conductors Witold Rowicki, Collin Davis and Alceo Galiera.

Pianist Ann Schein plays Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 21, and Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra is conducted by Sir Eugene Goossens.

When Warren DeMotte wrote in The LP/Stereo Record Guide & Tape Review of 1962 'The Schein-Goossens performance is bland', his criticism may have hampered the prolifiration of this disc, but at the same time he may have sparkled the curiosity of a few record collectors who wanted to investigate themselves and make up their own minds, independantly. In fact the performance of Ann Schein is not that bland as DeMotte suggested. And to help a bit the Kapp people had the clever idea to engrave the Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2 at the beginning of Side One, before the Concerto started, which obviously served as an incentive to buy the disc. And there is the clear recorded sound which was a trade mark of KAPP. The recording was made in the Grosser Musikvereinssaal in Vienna. This is the mono issue. The stereo version has reference 6001-S.

Wilhelm Kempff plays Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54, and Concertstück for Piano and Orchestra in C major, Op. 92 (Introduction and Allegro Appassionato for Piano and Orchestra)

The Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio is conducted by Rafael Kubelik

This is Wilhelm Kempff at a high age (about 79) playing a Romantic Concerto in a classical style. And critics should not complain about it because this is Kempff as he has always been as many will remember him, for example his Beethoven's Fourth Concerto with Paul van Kempen. Yes, the second movement of the Schumann Op. 54 does not get the sentimental approach. The third movement is affirmative yet gets some fine pianistics. And the first movement receives a strong and heroic execution reminding us of the Rheinische Symphony. Nevertheless there are subtle details and nuances to be discovered. Kempff and Kubelik teaming up results in joyous playing. And that is exactly why many will like this recording. Compared to the Concerto, the lesser known Concertstück travels in relatively calm water.
