Duke Ellington and His Orchestra play Tchaikovsky

The Nutcracker Suite

Arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Recorded May and June, 1960, in Los Angeles

This is the famous Nutcracker arranged by Billy Strayhorn and Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington. Issued in the USA on Columbia CS 8341, in Europe the Columbia recordings were distributed by Philips on their Hi-Fi Stereo label. The Ellington-Strayhorn disc had reference 847 048 BY.
When the agreement between Columbia and Philips ended in 1962, CBS started pressing and selling their recordings in Europe. In the early days the company did not have plates for all recordings for the European market ready. So it was convenient to use Philips plates. And that is what they did. The issue on sale here was pressed in England from the original Philips Hi-Fi Stereo plates of the LP with reference P847 048 BY.

Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges play The Blues

Wabash Blues - Basin Street Blues - Beale Street Blues

Weary Blues - St. Louis Blues - Loveless Love - Royal Garden Blues

The original stereo Verve with reference V6-8317 was issued in the US in the Fall of 1959. It is the more expensive issue if NM and pressed in the USA. The 180 gr. reissues are less authentic as far as analog sound is concerned. The edition of Back to Back listed here was published in Europe and pressed by Deutsche Grammophon-Polydor, with the same Reference V6-8317. It is exactly the same cover with Liner Notes written by pianist, writer and producer Leonard Feather, author of The ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAZZ first published in 1955. The LP received the French "Grand Prix du Disque".

Duke Ellington - Piano

Ray Brown - Bass

This one's for Blanton

Producer Norman Granz (1918-2001) knew Jimmy Blanton (1921-1942), Duke Ellington's famous bass player. Granz always wanted to make a recording of Duke and Ray Brown who was represented by Granz, but did not realize the two playing together until December 5, 1972.

The result is not only the right chemistry, but the sound recording is exceptional and can be marked as truly 'audiophile' and shows what analog sound recording is all about.

Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me (Ellington, Bob Russell) - Pitter Panther Patter (Duke Ellington) - Things Ain't What They Used to Be (Mercer Ellington) - Sophisticated Lady (Ellington, Irving Mills, Mitchell Parish) - See See Rider (Ma Rainey) - Fragmented Suite in Four Movements for Piano and Bass (Brown, Ellington)

Duke Ellington and his Orchestra

Blues in Orbit

Three J's Blues - Smada - Pie Eye's Blues - Sweet and Pungent - C Jam Blues - In a Mellow Tone - Blues in Blueprint - The Swingers Get the Blues, Too - The Swinger's Jump - Blues in Orbit - Villes Ville Is the Place, Man

This is the original analogue recording produced by Teo Macero, not the digitally re-recorded and converted to analogue reissue. Performers and soloists are those of the Ellington band around 1960 with Sam Woodyard, Cat Anderson, Russel Procope, Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves and Ray Nance (with his violin in CJam Blues). And of course the Duke at the piano on most numbers, and Billy Strayhorn in Smada and Blues in Blueprint.

"Blues in Blueprint" and "Villes Ville is the Place, man" were not recorded during the two nights the recordings were made. The cover says that they do not correspond to the stereo positionings of the other compositions.

Porgy & Bess
Ray Charles & Cleo Laine

This is the issue by British Decca of the original Crossover Records recordings made in 1976 in the US, published on Decca's London label. Reference of the 2 LP Set is D31D 2.

The music was arranged and conducted by Frank DeVol who accompanied Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, and many others.

Track listing:

Summertime (Instrumental) - My Man's Gone Now - A Woman Is A Sometime Thing - They Pass By Singin' - What You Want Wid Bess? - I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' (Instrumental) - I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' - Buzzard Song - Bess, You Is My Woman - Oh, Doctor Jesus - Crab Man - Here Come De Honey Man - Strawberry Woman (Instrumental) - Strawberry Woman - It Ain't Necessarily So (Instrumental) - It Ain't Necessarily So - There's A Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon For New York (Instrumental) - There's A Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon For New York - I Loves You, Porgy (Instrumental) - I Loves You, Porgy - Oh, Bess, Oh Where's My Bess (Instrumental) - Oh, Bess, Oh Where's My Bess - Oh Lord, I'm On My Way

From the Ray Charles website:

"Jazz producer Norman Granz convinced Ray to record George Gershwin’s “Porgy & Bess”. Ray’s first choice for the role of Bess was Gladys Knight but contractual difficulties made it impossible, and Cleo Laine was selected to sing the role. Frank DeVol arranged the music and conducted the 78-piece orchestra. Great instrumental artists like Joe Sample, Lee Ritenour, Joe Pass and Ernie Watts are just some of the many gifted in the orchestra. The album made it to #14 on the Billboard Jazz Album Charts."

For the famous Lorin Maazel recording see Opera.

A Rare LP:

Jacques Loussier plays Bach on the Piano and the Organ simultaneously.

This somewhat rare LP recording could be marked as a collector's item strictly for the admirer of Loussier's art. It is DECCA SKL 5036 from 1964.

Although it is indicated 'Stereo', it is not a real stereo recording it seems. The piano and the organ were recorded on separate tracks that were mixed together into the stereo groove. Or the tape with the recording of e.g. the organ was played back while the trio added the piano improvisations with bass and drums to it. Or vise versa. Maybe that is why the high fidelity is not very high.

Sinfonia from Cantata No. 2 - Chorale No. 16 (from 32 Various Chorales) - Chorale No. 16 (from 21 Chorales) - Fugue and Fantasy in G minor - Chorale No. 1 in B Flat (Sleepers, Wake!; Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme).

The Francis Bay Orchestra Plays The Music Of Duke Ellington

Take The A-Train - Don't Get Around Much Anymore - Jack The Bear - Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me - Passion Flower - Mainstem - Things Ain't What They Used To Be - Sophisticated Lady - Perdido - Solitude

To the admirers of the music of Duke Ellington and of big band music in general, the name of Francis Bay (1914-2005) is not new. He studied with Oskar Bach (who also taught Dutch violinist Herman Krebbers) and Bay was instrumental in the founding of several bands and orchestras, like The Skymasters (Dutch Radio). He played with The Ramblers, another Dutch Radio orchestra and concertized with violist Paul Godwin's ensemble. He led the Orchestra of the Belgian Radio. The clarinet and the trombone were his main instruments. He made recordings for the Philips label and also appeared on the British Mecca and German Baccarola labels. The music on the LP here on offer is extremely well recorded. It has a clear, defined and realistic sound.
