Johann Sebastian Bach:

Six (6) Suites for Cello Solo BWV 1007-1012

It was Pablo Casals who in 1912 discovered the 6 cello Suites of Johann Sebastian Bach and it was Pablo Casals of course who first performed these in concert. Casals started recording the Suites when he was about 50 years of age and had been living with his discovery some 38 years, long enough for these composition to grow in his mind and system. Famous music critic Irving Kolodin wrote: "...a complete issue of these works, played with lofty art and encompassing skill by Prince Pau, lord of all he surveys in the realm of the cello." The recordings were made for the Victor and His Master's Voice labels over a period of several years.

The accompanying books give a short analysis of the works, the complete data of the recordings and when they were transfered to LP, matrix numbers included. When the three Angel LPs were issued the only 'modern' competition of the complete Suites was the set by Antonio Janigro on Westminster.

Angel COLH 16/17/18 from 1958. The transfers are of an extremely high quality if compared to the sound of 78 RPM records in general. The technicians did a good job by filtering out hiss and rumble. The listener can fully concentrate on the performance. On top of that the complete set is well produced, has stylish covers and informative books. Records are NM. Covers are NM. Books are NM. Original Angel inner sleeves included. However the labels have different shades of grey. Nevertheless all in all a set for the true collector.

Casals - Bach Cello Suites - Complete. BWV 1007-1012. Angel COLH 16/17/18. Records, Covers and Books NM. $ 80.

Pierre Fournier - Cello
Gerald Moore - Piano

Before Pierre Fournier signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft, he recorded for the British Columbia label. With pianist Gerald Moore (Am I too Loud?) he reorded two recital discs: Columbia 33CX 1606 and 33CX 1644, released in April of 1958 and May of 1959 respectively.
Although the stereo LP format had been announced and the first dics were to be introduced in the fall of 1958, record companies still were making most recordings in mono and if they choose to anticipate the introduction of the stereo disc they would make recordings of spectacular orchestral works to show of the new format.

The Pierre Fournier/Gerald Moore recordings were made at least one year before their date of publication, 1957 and 1958 respectively. Now some 60-plus years later there aren't too many copies around, hence they are genuinely rare.

On the program on Side One:
* Bach: Recitatif from Organ Concerto No.3 (Arranged by Pierre Fournier)
* Bach: Minuet from Sonata For Cello And Double Bass
* Schumann: Abendlied
* Von Weber: Rondo from Sonata No. 3 For Violin And Piano, Op. 10 (Arranged by Gregor Piatigorsky)
* Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Song Without Words, Op. 109
* Chopin: Introduction And Polonaise, Op. 3

Side Two:
* Rimsky-Korsakov/Kreisler: Hymn To The Sun from Golden Cockerel
* Rimsky-Korsakov: Flight Of The Bumble Bee from "Tsar Saltan"
* Saint-Saëns: The Swan from "Carnival Of The Animals"
* Fauré: Berceuse, Op.16
* Granados: La Maja Dolorosa No.3 from Colleccion de Tonadillas (Arranged by Pierre Fournier)
* Granados: Intermezzo from "Goyescas" (Arranged by Gaspar Cassadó)
* Kreisler: La Gitana (Arranged by Pierre Fournier)

Many collectors play back mono recordings using a typical mono cartridge and preferably one with a low value of the compliance of the cantilver system. The result is that the reproduction has more authenticity and is less prone to revealing defects in the groove . A General Electric mono cartridge is a popular specimen. Or even an old cristal (ceramic) pick-up might do if mounted in a dedicated turntable that is equipped with a relatively heavy tonearm. Or if you opt for an old dynamic specimen of the 1960s, a round (spherical) tip may yield good results.

Willeke died in Pittsfield Massachusetts on 26 November, 1950. This recording was made when Harvey Shapiro was 55 years of age. Sergei Rachmaninoff: Cello Sonata Op. 19

Jean Sibelius: Malinconia

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Vocalise

Antonin Dvorak: Polonaise

In the 1950s reviewers often referred to the music of Rachmaninoff as music for the sound track of a Hollywood movie. Rachmaninoff was somewhat superficial and romantic. Invariably the reason was that many critics - especially in Europe - just knew the famous Piano Concerto Op. 18. One critic even wrote in a review that, when he was listening to the Second Symphony, he was expecting that a piano would join the orchestra at any moment soon assuming that hij was listening to the accompaniament by the orchestra. Only after much more recordings of Rachmaninoff's compositions became available, views changed. Not only when more concertos (Ashkenazy, Richter, Janis), symphonies (Weller, Kletzki, Ashkenazy) and complete sets of Etudes de tableaux and Preludes (Richter) were issued. For the Cello Sonata Op. 19 my favorite recording was the Nonesuch disc of Harvey Shapiro and Earl Wild. But now I have to admit that also Heinrich Schiff gives an excellent account, accompanied by an excellent Elisabeth Leonskaja on piano. On Side Two are three surprises: Malinconia written by a grieving Jean Sibelius, Vocalise - another of Sergei Rachmaninoff's famous compositions - and Polonaise by Antonin Dvorak.

Ludwig van Beethoven:

Complete Sonatas for Piano and Violoncello Opus 5, Op. 69 and Op. 102

Sviatoslav Richter - Piano

Mstislav Rostropovich - Cello

These performances were recorded in 1961, 1962 and 963 by the Mercury recording team for Philips and they never left the catalog.

First issued as Hi-Fi Stereo 835 182 and 835 183 AY and thereafter with the same reference but with the modern labels. In between they were also released as individual gatefold releases: 839 602 and 839 603 respectively. To continue the availability of these renown performances the Philips engineers cut new plates and from these a new set was pressed and published in 1987. It was presented in the new, modern and stylish look that Philips had adopted a few years earlier used for all releases and formats. The Sonates were issued on Compact Disc a few years earlier, in 1984.

This is Philips 412 256-1 in a gatefold cover. The individual records have references 412 257-1 and 258-1. Liner notes in English, German and French.

The records are NM. The "floppy" cover is EX because it easily shows wear.
