Modern American Music Series:

Elliott Carter
String Quartet

The Walden Quartet of the University of Illinois
Homer Schmidt, Bernard Goodman, Violins; John Garvey, Viola; Robert Swenson, 'Cello.

In his 'The LP/Stereo Record Guide & Tape Review Warren DeMotte writes: 'The music of this American composer is not immediately accessible to the listener, but despite its complexity, imagination and integrety are apparent. At all times Carter's means are musical; they are also intellectual and emotional, with a decidedly modern character and they repay serious listening.'

Columbia Masterworks ML 5104 Mono 6-eye label from 1965.

Igor Markevitch
Piano Compositions:

*Variations, Fugue et Envoi on a theme of Haendel (1941)

*Stefan le poète (1939)

Kazuoki Fujii - Piano

Produced by A. de Wouters d'Oplinter who is known for the production of recordings of young and upcoming artists, of neglected compositions, etc. Published on the Belgian Decca and Pavane labels.

All sorts of associations with styles of paintings come to mind: abstract, cubism, absurdity, when listening to Markevitch's Variations on the "Jolly Blacksmith". It is a continuation and further elaboration found in "Stepan" composed some two years earlier. The music is well and metaculously played by the pianist. This LP gives a different picture and also additional details of Igor Markevitch who came to fame as a conductor of works by Tcherepnin, Kodaly, Stravinsky, but also Beethoven, Berlioz, Mozart, and of the Symphonies of Tchaikovsky.

Apollon Diskport - Pavane Records ADW 7103. Record NM. Cover EX+. Direct Metal Mastering pressing. 1982.

Ishiro Seki
Meditative Music by Japanese Contemporary Composers

Wadatsumi-Douso & Takashi Yoshimatsu

I wrote the following description for a listing on eBay, published for the first time in April 2008, with the kind assistence of a Japanese record collector. The text has been copied by ebay sellers ever since:

Shakuhachi (bamboo flute): Ichiro Seki
Sangen (samisen): Akiko Nishigata
Drums: Masaji Ono, Hitoko Urushibata
Synthesizer: Takashi Yoshimatsu

Side A:
1. Shingetsu (Moon in the heart) by Wadatsumi-Douso
2. Three of Shinado (Wind) by Takashi Yoshimatsu
a. Saimon (Popular ballad) 'Upward to the wind'

Side B:
Three of Shinado (Wind) by Takashi Yoshimatsu (continued from side A)
b. Kazagiri 'Direction of the wind'
c. Dances 'Downward to the wind'

The music is very well recorded. The sound of the bamboo flute is very attractive because of its complex and full character. The music is at times meditative and at times dramatic (if that is the appropriate word). Although the record is Mint it has been metaculously cleaned on my improved Keith Monks record Cleaning Machine for which I have devised a very effective cleaning method. The cover is Mint as well.

Kojima Recordings LM 1225. 1981. Japanese pressing. Record and Cover as New. Also listed under brasswind-woodwind.

Wadatsumi-Douso & Takashi Yoshimatsu - Contemporary Music - Kujima Recordings LM 1225 Japanese pressing. Record and Cover as New - $14.
